  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

To reduce the draining of wetlands for palm oil or pulp/paper plantations I can intentionally choose to purchase sustainable sourced materials or even choose to not buy products that are continually made using palm oil. As a side note, did you see the news about MIT graduate's C16 Biosciences palm oil alternative? Link: https://news.mit.edu/2023/clean-alternative-palm-oil-replacement-0622

What did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?

That we are woefully behind on public transit as a town, region, and nation. I find it fascinating that high speed rail and electromagnetic rail can decrease carbon output so significantly compared to planes. And that the rail, while not as fast as planes, is still significantly faster than any other transportation options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Dacia Harris 4/29/2024 10:35 AM
By understanding the difference between use, sell, and other expiration dates, I can better plan for meal prep and decrease my overall food waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Small portions on smaller plates means that you do not mindlessly overeat which reduces GI issues and can help to curb weight gain through excessive calories.
