Briana Gilman
"Hi! My name is Brie and I'm a fourth year neuroscience student. I am here because I am eager to finally have the opportunity to learn more about existing environmental issues and how we, as students, can do our part, both big and small, to combat these global changes. I hope to come out of this class with a greater understanding of how I can spread awareness about environmental issues and combat them now, but also how I can continue doing so during my future career as a pediatrician. Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 4 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Health and Education
Finding out ways to educate the Youth
For my research project, I chose environmental education for children due to my passion and love for working with kids. Through this project, I learned so much about why environmental education is neglected in schools and how teachers do not feel prepared or confident to teach their students about the environmental issues currently happening. While I do not plan to be a teacher, I hope to still find ways to educate the youth as a pediatrician.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.

Briana Gilman 5/30/2025 7:01 PMI decided to join this ecochallenge because I want to do my part to save what's left of the environment. Through my experiences this quarter, I have learned about the importance of environmental education, especially for kids. All of my research on this topic reminds me of just how important it is to uplift the youth and how much of an impact we can have on children's lives. I hope to continue making an impact through my future career as a pediatrician!-

Briana Gilman 4/27/2025 3:10 PMI have replaced all the lightbulbs in my bedroom with LED light bulbs! I hope this will reduce my electric bill -
Briana Gilman 4/27/2025 3:07 PMWith it being midterm season, I am especially seeing the importance of going on daily walks to reset myself and connect with nature. This challenge helps me see the importance of taking care of myself despite my to-do list feeling never ending. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Briana Gilman 4/18/2025 2:46 PMI love my daily walks. it's great getting fresh air and having time to unplug. I think in WW there could be some improvements to the sidewalks because they are very uneven and I've caught myself tripping multiple times from not paying attention to the ground and where I'm walking -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?
Briana Gilman 4/18/2025 2:19 PMI can do my best to recycle cans & bottles that I use. I have a bad habit of throwing cardboard into the trash instead of the recycling, so I'm trying to be more mindful of that.-
CHARLOTTE GAYNER 4/29/2025 10:40 PMHi Briana! My roommate and I have started placing a cardboard box by the door and filling it up with recyclables to have it more visible in our daily routines. This has also made us recycle the boxes we receive packages in, as they are our new recycling bins.

Briana Gilman 4/08/2025 12:24 PMEven though our campus is so large & I'm constantly walking around from class to class, I never really take the initiative to go on additional walks where the sole purpose of my walk isn't to get to my next class. I found taking a walk around the neighborhood adjacent to my apartment to be very refreshing and it really helped me start my day off on the right track. I hope to continue taking more walks because I believe it's a good way to clear my mind and start or even end the day off on a good note.
