Marc's actions
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost or worm bin where I live.
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Research Bottom-Trawling Seafloor Impacts
Seafloor Protection
Each day, I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about how bottom-trawling impacts on the seafloor.
Buildings
Research Heat Pumps
High-Efficiency Heat Pumps
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching heat pumps to see if installing one makes sense for my home/building.
Health and Education
Watch Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series
Family Planning and Education
I will watch Drawdown’s Climate Solutions 101 and share what I learned with others.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Visit the CoastWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Marc Garcia 3/22/2024 6:18 PMI visited the coastline of Point Pinos and saw tide pools along the coastline and all the critters that lived there. The main thing I learned was how even rocks along the coastline provide an important shelter for animals to live at. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Marc Garcia 3/07/2024 12:18 PMI engage with my community more when I can walk or take public transit to the places I want to go. For example, when I lived in Seattle, I would take the bus and light rail to all the places in the city because it was a lot easier to use those resources than driving your car into the city and paying crazy amounts of money for parking and gas.-
Suzanne Worcester 3/20/2024 5:12 PMI totally agree. Prior to COVID, I had a whole set of "bus friends" who I get together with every so often now. So many opportunities for community when we get out of our cars (or carpool!) and ride or walk with others one way or another.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 RsWhat are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Marc Garcia 3/05/2024 12:28 PMAn "R" I need to add to my daily practice is "Reduce" because sometimes I get caught up in the trends and impulsively buy stuff instead of thinking if I really need the item I am buying. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate My Household Carbon FootprintAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Marc Garcia 2/29/2024 1:11 PMThe different choices I saw it reduce my carbon footprint were reducing the amount of meat in my diet, switching to an electric or hybrid car, using renewable energy, and walking more often. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Research Heat PumpsWhy is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?
Marc Garcia 2/29/2024 1:01 PMTaking action on climate change is important to me because some of my family live in Tampa, Florida which is a place that was hit by many hurricanes last year and will continue to be affected by the extreme natural disasters caused by climate change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Research Bottom-Trawling Seafloor ImpactsWhy is protecting the seafloor important?
Marc Garcia 2/29/2024 12:43 PMWhen bottom trawling for fish, the nets that drag along the ocean floor destroy the animals and plants since they move the sediment they live in. This also alters the seafloor of a continental shelf from soft sediment to bare rock which can eliminate the animals that once lived in the sediment. This also puts into question the future stability of continental shelves which is the source of many types of fish that we eat every day. So we need to start using more sustainable fishing practices to ensure the fish populations and seafloors will continue to thrive.
