Find out what’s happening in your neighborhood
While global and national actions get a lot of attention, it’s often at the local community level where individuals can have the greatest input and where change is most tangible. But every community is unique and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. I will spend 20 minutes finding out how my neighborhood, town or city is helping the environment and building local resilience.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products
Engineered Sinks
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how people can build with carbon-storing materials - including agricultural byproducts - and discuss it with my peers or post to social media.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Nutrient Management
Nutrient Management
I will research and support local farmers who have made the decision to not use synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Electricity
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.

Bioplastics; Reduced Plastics
I will avoid buying and using 3 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Industry
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Industry
Plastics Audit
Reduced Plastics
I will complete a plastics audit to see where plastics show up in my life and determine how I can reduce the use of single-use plastics.

Kathleen Gage 6/25/2024 1:33 PMAny Friends fans? Reading about carbon offsetting made me think of the episode when Joey (who likes to eat and doesn't share food) promises not to eat meat so Phoebe won't feel guilty eating the meat that she is craving while pregnant with triplets (a surrogate for her brother)! While the "trade concept" was funny in a TV show, I think the effort should be in everyone reducing carbon emissions.-
Tonia Wu 6/26/2024 7:38 AMI didn't watch much of Friends but that's a great connection. I'm ambivalent about offsetting too. I get the overall concept, but in practice it seem like there's a lot of clever accounting going whose real purpose seems to be to allow some actors to continue business-as-usual while greenwashing their image...

Kathleen Gage 6/25/2024 1:15 PMMy community of Marlton Lakes became the 7th neighborhood community in NJ to become a National Wildlife Federation Certified Community Wildlife Habitat: Evesham Township, New Jersey - Marlton Lakes becomes 7th neighborhood community in the state to receive the title ‘Certified Wildlife Habitat Community’ by the National Wildlife Federation (evesham-nj.org) - some of the homeowners in the neighborhood opened their yards up to be toured by the community as part of the Marlton Garden Tour (and the club sold native plants to support their organization), Evesham Twp. installed a new pollinator garden and became part of the Bee City USA program which encourages communities to sustain pollinators, such as native bees, by increasing the abundance of native plants, providing nest sites and more and I found out that Evesham Twp. and other local townships will take textiles to be recycled (animal shelters will accept towels and flat sheets but not fitted sheets or pillow cases) so they don't end up in landfills using the recycle coach app which I highly recommend if you don't already have it. -
Kathleen Gage 6/25/2024 6:13 AMReducing some clutter in my house and have a bunch of old sheets and towels that I didn't want to put into trash. Animal Welfare will take the flat sheets and towels but not fitted sheets or pillowcases. Discovered in the recycling coach app that my township will take old sheets for recycling, so they won't end up in a landfill and that there are places that recycle textiles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Companies Leading in Green EnergyEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
