Reduce Food Waste

Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

    An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    If I had an extra $1,500 a year I would like to donate it to my local food bank; to provide cooking classes to the local youth. These classes would aim to provide education on not only cooking skills, but also reducing food waste though teaching proper composting techniques or using scraps for broth, or soups instead of throwing them away.

    Eating more fruits/vegetables & less meat has an overall positive affect through improving our health, environment, animal welfare, food security, and economic benefits;
    - Health: Eating more fruits & vegetables can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Eating less meat benefits heart health by lower saturated fats and cholesterol.
    -Environment: Producing plant-based foods requires fewer resources & generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to meat production, reducing our carbon footprint. Additionally reducing the amount of biomass required for animal farming.
    - Animal Welfare: Eating less meat reduces demand for animal products, potentially improving animal welfare by reducing overcrowding & stress in farming environments.
    - Food Security: A Plant-based diets can be more resource-efficient, potentially freeing up resources to feed more people & improve food security.
    - Economic Benefits: Shifting to a plant-based diet can reduce healthcare costs & create opportunities for farmers, leading to a more sustainable agricultural sector.

    Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Diana Ferrel's avatar
    Diana Ferrel 3/12/2024 12:37 PM
    People in richer countries eat more meat than those in other places because an increase in wealth allows people to afford to eat more calories through a wider range or sources. As animal protein and products are more expensive than vegetation, when income increases so does access to a wider array of options. Eating more meat affects our planet, and other people by significantly contributing to the release of greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, along with taking over major amounts of land for agriculture use, which contributes to habitat loss, resources depletion, pollution and climate change. Eating more meat affects our bodies because some meats are high in fat, some in saturated fat which can lead to raise in cholesterol levels in the blood, which can lead to raised risk of coronary heart disease.

    What coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?

    This weekend I visited Asilomar State Beach. While I was there I saw sea anemones, hermit crabs, oysters, a variety of birds, fish, and so many sea shells. This taught me about the abundance of biodiversity taking place at this beach. I also learned Asilomar is a Marine Protected Area which allows for the protection and conservation of the marine habitats, and life in this area. These protections make it possible for wildlife to rest, feed, and replenish populations with limited human disturbance as possible.

    Instead of eating a breakfast sandwich like normal, I switched it out for a bowl of yogurt with a bunch of fruit, like papaya, strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. I also added locally sourced honey from the farmer market, and a bunch of seeds. I intended to incorporate more meatless-meals into my diet.
