Jackie Fernandez

As someone from the Central Valley who has experienced extreme temperatures and poor air quality, I am here because I am interested in spreading awareness about the role we play in climate change and how it is linked to our health. The Central Valley is heavily relied on for agriculture, and with high temperatures and the use of pesticides come chronic health risks. I aspire a future career in public health in which I can represent communities like my hometown, and so it is important to me that I educate people on how to protect themselves from air pollutants and heat-related illnesses. I am also here because I want to learn how to communicate my findings and perspectives effectively so that any audience, whether it be professionals or community members, can be educated on their impact as well as the risks they face. I look forward to learning alongside individuals from different backgrounds who have a common goal in mind.
