On Sept 4, we will have 3 guests come talk to us about sustainability initiatives at Vanier. In preparation, please read over VANIER'S 5-YEAR SUSTAINABILITY ACTION PLAN 2018-2023 and then write an EcoChallenge post that includes the following: - What do you think about the plan? Is it ambitious enough? Is there anything missing or superfluous? From your own observation and experience, how well is Vanier doing? List some questions that you would like to ask our speakers regarding Sustainability at Vanier? - Identify at least 3 initiatives that you are potentially interested in contributing to this semester and explain why. (Note there is a column labelled student involvement.) For more detailed information, you can also consult the 2020 VANIER ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT in the links.

Write an Ecochallenge POST to our team, briefly stating how you currently commute to Vanier. In Quebec, because we have a lot of hydro electric power, one of the main source of carbon emissions is from transportation. What commuting options do you have that would be healthier for you and the planet? Will you be considering any changes for this semester? If so, select or create an EcoChallenge action. If not, explain what your particular challenges are and what you could do to help other people in your situation (e.g. organise car sharing, propose a bus shuttle, etc.)

For the week of Sept 25 to Oct 2, please read the documents attached AND IF YOU CAN, please attend the Sept 27 Climate March. Many people and organisations feel that the government is dragging its feet on the important changes required to meet our climate commitments. For your post, reflect on the value of mass demonstrations. Include a photo of a protest banner or slogan that you find effective (if you can't attend the event then find a photo on the web from other climate marches).

Hi, my name is Marie and I currently study in the Social Science law profile program at Vanier. I'm in my second year, third semester and plan on pursuing a career in corporate law (ironic that I dislike confrontation). Although I haven't made a final decision yet for my project, the topic of fast fashion intrigues me the most. I'm interested in various things, but not passionate about any. It's difficult for me to stick to one hobby or interest for longer than five seconds, so I collect and drop new ones relatively often. A few examples would be travelling, reading, road trips, designing shirts/posters, organizing/decorating, and so on. -

Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, produced by human activity. Understanding your carbon footprint, whether it be personal or organizational, is beneficial for the following reasons: it helps you recognize and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions; it permits companies to disclose their environmental performance data; it can be used as data to educate others about the costs associated with the environment; and, in general, it's a useful tool for energy and environmental management. The biggest challenges are the costs and inconveniences of making the necessary changes. Certain examples could be how far you live, the time/effort to commit, being able to cover the expenses, and so on. Those barriers make it rather difficult to get a proper amount of people to reduce their footprint enough to make consistent progress. Overcoming the complications isn't something everyone has the opportunity of doing, unfortunately not everyone has the means of doing so. -
Priscilla-Marie Farias 9/03/2024 10:34 AMDue to living in the North Eastern suburbs of Lorraine, it complexifies my commute to Vanier. My municipality unfortunately doesn't have a transportation system that leaves Lorraine. Rosemere's transportation system makes it relatively difficult to cross Laval and into Montreal. For instance, the buses always late and sometimes just skip your stop, many of my coworkers are frequently late. I'm very fortunate to be able to drive to campus every day. Another issue is that all my friends are from Laval and quite far away from each other, making it counterproductive to carpool and remain on time. It would be nice to propose a shuttle bus system, at least it would benefit specific people. The goal is not all, but most. -

Vanier's plan towards sustainability appears to be thoroughly thought out. A wide range of topics was covered in direct and simple bullet points, making it easier to understand. The chart addresses strategies, possible actions, indicators, responsibilities, objectives, current status, future objectives, and student involvement. Looking at the empty boxes, I'd assume it's still a work in progress even though it was almost two years ago...? Or maybe we're missing the updated version. Now being in my third semester at Vanier, I've noticed that the College is very implicated in sustaining the environment and the community. My first semester was in fall of 2023, meaning I was only able to see the finished result and not the progress. As expected, things don't always go according to plan, but Vanier seems to be doing relatively well with the concept in general.
How long did it take to plan everything? Was the plan to be realistic or optimistic? Was the time-frame too accurate enough?
One: Students benefit from content in class and outside of the classroom. It's something easy and simple, yet very informative.
Two: Students do actual class work and engage with sustainability in the classroom and across disciplines. It provides a different way of teaching for professors and a different way for students to learn.
Three: Students see sustainability at work on campus in projects as they unfold. It's done without even noticing it as we walk through the campus.
