  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/30/2025 7:40 AM
I learned that there is a need for family planning because it increases gender equality and is a human right. It is better for population growth because it slows it down, reducing stress on our environment. It increases social and economic development because it reduces poverty, because kids are expensive. It can help reduce Unintended pregnancies, thus helping mental health. The needs differ a lot. In European countries, the need is less because the gap is much smaller than in places such as the Middle East, where there are very few rights, and it is very important. It's also important in places that don't have access to women's healthcare because an abortion might not be available, so it's very important to have them in those areas.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/30/2025 6:18 AM
It is very cool because it's a lot more reliable than other sources, but its development is still in its infancy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/29/2025 6:40 AM
They could be installed on the top of hotels and other tall buildings.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
What was the most interesting thing to learn about sustainable aquaculture practices?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/29/2025 6:08 AM
How it can complement and reduce stress on wild fish stocks and environments when it's done properly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/24/2025 5:49 AM
No I had never heard this term before, what surprised me was the fact that fumes from landfills could be used as a biomass energy source and that some crops like corn arent better than normal fossil fuels but some like Perenial grasses are.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/23/2025 6:14 AM
Donating money to research and advocating for it on social media would seem the most feasible to me.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/16/2025 4:08 PM
I enjoy it significantly more, and it is a lot more relaxing/calming when I walk instead of have someone drive me. I haven't really found it to affect my engagement in my community because I've just been doing small trips
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/04/2025 7:14 AM
People in richer countries eat more meat than people in poorer countries because they can afford it. Eating a reduclous amount of meat can increase cholesterol, affect the planet by producing a lot of waste, and affect other people by possibly contaminating water supply with feces.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/04/2025 7:03 AM
I go to MLK Park frequently because that's where I have practice and I always have my mom take me, but I tried carpooling with my teammates, and it was fun because of more socializing, better for the environment because one less car, and better for my mom's use of time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Indigo Dutton's avatar
    Indigo Dutton 4/02/2025 6:13 AM
I had never heard of silvopasture before. I think the biggest advantage of it is all the carbon it would remove form the atmosphere.
