Share Your Story

Find out what’s happening in your neighborhood

While global and national actions get a lot of attention, it’s often at the local community level where individuals can have the greatest input and where change is most tangible. But every community is unique and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. I will spend 20 minutes finding out how my neighborhood, town or city is helping the environment and building local resilience.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

Plant based diets have less of an impact on the environment than a diet containing meat. I read that a person eating a plant based diet produces 50% less carbon dioxide, uses 13x less water, and uses 18x less land than meat-eaters. That saves 1,100 gallons of water, 30 square feet of forested land, and 20 pounds of CO2 equivalent every day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Tend A Garden
Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

Whenever I take the time out to watch other animals in their tasks (ant moving something in their path, a bird taking a bath, a fish swimming by) it always puts life into perspective. We can get so tied up in our human lives, and the events happening in it, that we forget to appreciate the environment around us.

I completely agree with this! I try to always help worms that were washed onto the concrete back into the grass on my daily walks. It always puts my life in perspective and makes me feel like I have a little control in helping the environment around me, especially when most things that happen to our environments feel out of our control.

Changing habits is difficult especially when you have already been aware of how your actions impact the environment. Even if you only remember to do 1 thing differently a day, it's still a step in the right direction!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Katherine Dollman's avatar
    Katherine Dollman 6/06/2024 8:30 AM
Smaller portions help with digestion, stability of blood sugar and energy levels. It aids with weight loss and cravings and can make you more aware of what and how much of something is going into your body.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Katherine Dollman's avatar

"A single cow produces between 154 to 264 pounds of methane gas per year. Not counting for the emissions of any other livestock, 1.5 billion cattle, raised specifically for meat production worldwide, emit at least 231 billion pounds of methane into the methane into the atmosphere each year (Our World in Data)" (EPA).

Raising livestock for human consumption uses almost 70% of agricultural land, which contributes to deforestation, biodiversity loss and water pollution.

Roughly 33% of croplands are dedicated to livestock feed crops. The crops have their own negative effects (chemical runoff, water consumption, etc.) and the animals that they're being fed to have an even larger effect. It's like double dipping with environmental pressures.

Eating red meat has been linked to higher rate of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and cancer.

Personally, animal agriculture has also affected my mental health due to knowing the mistreatment of the animals in the industry.

Due to the area I live in and the distance I need to travel for work, I'm unable to take public transportation, ride a bike, or carpool. Since I'm unable to do those things, I'm going to focus more on getting locally made/grown items, and things that require less transportation.
