Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/30/2025 5:54 PM
It's interesting to see the difference in education between high-income countries and low-income countries. I think that this is the biggest gap, and if we provide more education for family planning, then we could consume less as a species altogether. Family planning is important because if we didn't have it, people would most likely have children sooner in their lives and more of them, which would lead to more consumption of materials.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/29/2025 11:12 AM
Microturbines could be placed on the city hall and any tall buildings really.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/29/2025 5:42 AM
I think that personal transportation can feel more efficient, but public transport is better in an efficiency sense. Instead of transporting just one or two people regularly, public transport can move a multitude of people, and the routes it takes keep looping.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/28/2025 10:55 AM
They're pretty neat, but right now they don't even make up close to 1% of the world's energy. Even if the industry were to grow, Drawdown's predictions only have it producing around 1% of the world's electricity.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/26/2025 11:46 AM
You can try to raise awarness of the peat lands so that people know how good it is for the climate
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/26/2025 10:57 AM
I think one of the parts about climate change that feels overwhelming is that it feels like the measurements that we could take aren't being taken up by the government. This is stressful since there might not be a whole lot of time before things get increasingly dire.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What was the hardest item to reduce using or cut out that is plastic? Did you find a way to do it?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/26/2025 10:01 AM
I think one of the hardest things to cut out is packaging. This could be lasting parts that seal plastic containers that you don't use, or other things along that line.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/26/2025 9:58 AM
I could find more ways to reuse things that we have instead of immediately recycling them or throwing them out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
How could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/26/2025 9:56 AM
I recycle every day and make sure that everything goes where it's supposed to. I also have reusable containers that I use pretty much every day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Hayden Curtin's avatar
    Hayden Curtin 4/26/2025 9:54 AM
There are a lot of single-use containers out there, and that's why I use reusable ones.
