Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Transportation
Try Carpooling
Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 30 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Camille Cremers 4/30/2025 11:14 AMThe need for family planning is essential for informed reproductive choices and health improvement. Different places have varying needs based on cultural, economic, and social factors that affect access to family planning resources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Camille Cremers 4/30/2025 10:51 AMI learned a lot because I had no prior knowledge of it. I learned that Wave and tidal energy are renewable energy sources harnessed from the ocean's movement. Tidal energy utilizes the rise and fall of tides, while wave energy utilizes the motion of ocean waves. Compared to other energy sources, they have high energy density, are predictable, and offer potential for continuous energy generation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhat was the most interesting thing to learn about sustainable aquaculture practices?
Camille Cremers 4/30/2025 9:28 AMSustainable fish farming recycles fish waste to help plants grow, reducing waste and boosting food production. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Camille Cremers 4/29/2025 11:10 AMThey could be installed on top of some tall or even small city buildings in downtown Asheville, large open areas like parks, or any high areas, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Camille Cremers 4/24/2025 11:09 AMI have heard of biomass technology before. I was surprised to learn that it takes waste such as plants and manure and turns it into energy, and also creates natural fertilizers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Camille Cremers 4/23/2025 10:45 AMI can share what I learn about geothermal energy with others and speak up for clean energy. I can also give time to learn more and support leaders who want to use it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Camille Cremers 4/22/2025 11:04 AMI can turn off lights when not in the room, turn off electronics, and use smart thermostats because these are all good ways to be more energy efficient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Camille Cremers 4/22/2025 10:58 AMI visited Myrtle Beach and I learned that there are lots of coral and jellyfish washed up on shore that are broken or dead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsWhat are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?
Camille Cremers 4/22/2025 10:47 AMOther easy and low-cost ways to reduce my water usage at home are to take shorter showers, not leave the water running in the sink when you are washing hands, and only fill drinking cups with the amount of water you are going to drink. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Camille Cremers 4/22/2025 10:36 AMI would rather use this money on more spending money on fun activities that I can do with my friends and family, or other things like clothes I may need.
