What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/21/2025 5:49 PM
Supermarkets play a large role in emissions. I was unaware that they had the same impact as greenhouse gases.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
What coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?

I went to Charlston with the band for a three day exersion. We played music at a festival and got to tour and walk around the downtown learning all about the coast. On Friday, 4/11/25 we went to the beach as a band and spent three hours hanging out and playing on the sand.

    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

My sister has planted a garden on our porch for her SAE project for her agriculture class and I have been helping her tend it. I have been helping water the plants and making sure there are not weeds or other harmful things in the bed. The garden has kale in it so I have also helped her to pick those parts of the plant that are ready.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/09/2025 9:33 AM
Price, functionality, and life expectancy are big contributing factors when looking into purchasing things to help with carbon offset. People come from many different backgrounds, and some people can't afford the same type of offset as others, so looking into price is important. You also have to recognize your situation and what will work best for you. So, understanding that you are truly capable of keeping up with and getting that is another contributing factor. Then, you also have life expectancy. Knowing how long what you are doing will keep doing what you got it for is helpful. If you get something to last a long amount of time, and it stops working almost immediately, you have a problem.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/08/2025 10:00 AM
We can become more conscious about what we eat, such as eliminating or down-sizing the amount of foods we eat with palm oil. Many products that are not food also have palm oil, so refraining from using them could decrease the number of peatlands being wiped out for palm oil plantations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/08/2025 9:58 AM
So many women don't have access to the proper family planning resources. This leads to an increased amount of unplanned pregnancies, teen girl deaths, and improperly cared for women who are pregnant and the children they are pregnant with. Because there is little to no education about family planning that is easily accessible, we get an increased number of unplanned pregnancies, and the population will grow bigger and bigger. The overall message is that we need to increase access to these resources and stop unwanted pregnancy and population growth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/08/2025 9:55 AM
By cleaning up the waterfront, the surrounding areas for housing and businesses have become extremely expensive. Because the market for building anything along the water is growing in price, so do the things bieng sold in those places. This begins a chain reaction. If housing and buildings for workers get more expensive, so do the products, then the people around that area begin to be a certain way. This keeps going in a circle until only those of extreme wealth grasp these properties and those on the poverty line are left without a place to go home at the end of the day

The real estate market in Asheville has been blown out of control. Trying to find a house for an affordable price is outrageous, let alone a place to rent. With this change, people who are unable to afford the new cost of housing will be forced to leave or fall to a new level of poverty. People of color have not been able to find much success in Asheville, and with that, they will be the ones ending up displaced. And the white people will continue to rise up the ranks, almost eliminating that group of people.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/07/2025 1:35 PM
Well, my mom works in the court building and you can see just by walking in way more men work there than women. This is because women grow up with less education opportunity and will therefore be unable to gain such positions. Barriers like this will continue to stay up unless we make sure the future of women have the same opportunities as their male counterparts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/03/2025 9:16 AM
We took time to learn about silvopastures today in class. Silvo pastures are an innovative way to keep up with cattle farming but in a sustainable way.

How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Mackenzie Bulfer's avatar
    Mackenzie Bulfer 4/02/2025 9:49 AM
I am a vegetarian which has a slight impact. Although me as one of the 8 billion people on this planet doesn't directly impact deforestation, it is nice to think that I am at least trying to do my part. I do however drink coffee. Not every day, but it is a reoccuring event in my days on this planet. Coffee again does have an impact on deforestation, but the one person, me, drinking it does not have a direct impact. But, if everyone thought like that, well the world may not be the same. So I do hurt and help with this phenomenon.
