Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 30 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
Reduced Food Waste
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost or worm bin where I live.
Transportation
Try Carpooling
Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 3 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Transportation
Go by Bike
Bicycle Infrastructure
I will commute by bike 1 miles each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meals each day of the challenge.
Land Sinks
Learn More about Silvopasture
Silvopasture
I will spend at least 30 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Land Sinks
Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 30 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Buildings
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Luna Balassa 4/22/2025 2:36 PMI went to the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Specifically, it's in the Caribbean Sea. One thing I learned about the area is that iguanas own that area, they are everywhere! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?
Luna Balassa 4/22/2025 2:18 PMIts more fun to ride a bike in my personal opinion, it's also a really good way to get in some exercise. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Luna Balassa 4/22/2025 1:25 PMPeople in wealthier countries are able to afford more meat. Meats are not good for the planet and they're not particularly good for us in large quantities so cutting back makes a big difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Luna Balassa 4/22/2025 11:45 AMWhen you use smaller plates you fell fuller with less food leading to healthier diets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Luna Balassa 4/22/2025 6:37 AMThe waste of food motivates me most because not only do many people go without but also just thinking about how many resources were put into making the food just to be wasted really motivates me to compost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Luna Balassa 4/21/2025 7:47 PMWhen I practice mindfulness I slow down and get full faster, therfore not needing as much food to fill me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Luna Balassa 4/21/2025 7:44 PMSpending more time at Side can you really help your mental health, walking outside in nature creates time to really be alone with your thoughts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Luna Balassa 4/21/2025 4:28 PMI eat a lot of products that support deforestation like dairy, and red meat, so I could probably cut my intake of those foods and enjoy more Forest friendly foods instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Luna Balassa 4/21/2025 4:07 PMI learned that the Ozone layers are super important to humans and are being harmed by dangerous chemicals putting humans in danger. Refrigerants also cause major damage to our ozone. Supermarkets that have to refrigerate large masses of food 24/7 are a big portion of this problem.
