  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/16/2024 11:32 AM
It can positively affect you because it has fewer calories and less fat. It can positively affect the planet by killing fewer animals and bettering the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/15/2024 11:26 AM
I learned that family planning is an extremely important human right that is essential when trying to keep a growing population under control. Many people do not have access to it, and it can cause issues like poverty and overpopulation in certain areas. The needs of different people in different places compare to each other because some people don't have access to certain resources. In some undeveloped countries, people don't have access to many things developed countries do, like family planning. Some countries or areas need family planning more than others, like cities that are overcrowded or places in poverty.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/14/2024 11:20 AM
I think funding places that do research and development is the most feasible for me. I don't live in a place where magma is constantly close to the surface, so I probably won't install a system. But, donations would be a great way for me to support geothermal energy from afar.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/13/2024 11:19 AM
They could be installed on tall strong buildings downtown, Asheville high school, and other schools, near the river arts district, since there’s a lot of space like parks.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/09/2024 11:18 AM
I have heard of biomass technology before this. What surprised me is how much it can do, and how much can be made with it. It can really improve the world in so many ways and there are so many uses!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Try Carpooling
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/07/2024 6:52 PM
some places I go frequently are; school, the mall, and my friend's houses. I carpool with my best friend four times or more during the week to some of these places already.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/03/2024 11:03 AM
There are many ways to protect peatlands. We can stop doing activities such as agricultural conversion and drainage, and restoring the waterlogged conditions. These all require peat formation. We need to work on preserving the peatlands and prioritize conservation. if you live far away, you can support organizations defending the peatlands.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Amaryn Howie's avatar
    Amaryn Howie 5/01/2024 5:23 PM
I learned that refrigerants (CFCs) impact the climate and cause global warming. Grocery stores contribute to this problem because they have refrigerants that enter the atmosphere and start warming periods.

If you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, you can make better decisions about the food you buy. If the best-by or use-by dates on items only give you a few days until they aren't the best quality, it might be a better decision to pick a different item, on the shelf. It's also important to know the difference, because if the sell-buy date says the day you want to use it, it's still good until it passes the use-by date. If you know the differences between these, you'll waste less food!
