Is this a new habit for you? Have you noticed anything around NWN that we could improve on for energy savings?

I notice that I leave my computer plugged in all night, and then keep it plugged in most of the day. That probably wastes a lot of energy - I am trying to unplug the charger during the night and only have it plugged in when I actually need it charging. Can there be something similar at NWN with electronics?

Today I was able to visit the farm I worked on for 4 months and eat a completely locally sourced meal: homemade kimchi grilled cheese on sourdough they baked fresh! I even got to say hi to cows whose milk made the cheese!

Health and Education Fund Family Planning
When family planning focuses on healthcare provision and meeting the expressed needs of women, it results in empowerment, equality, and well-being, and the benefits to the planet are side effects. Why is family planning an important civil rights consideration?

I donated to Planned Parenthood as part of the NWN Giving Campaign! I love Planned Parenthood and believe in their work to provide people with empowering reproductive and educational care are intimately tied to addressing the climate crisis! Not only are women and girls more likely to be more severely affected by food insecurity, air and water pollution, and natural disasters, but also tons of studies have shown that women in positions of power and leadership lead to more inclusive and decisive climate action!

I am really trying to teach my kids to turn off lights that they are not using - its turned into a bit of a game with the family and friendly calling each other out if someone forgets!

That's awesome! When I was a kid my parents incentivized saving electricity by every month looking at our utility bills together, and if my sister and I helped use less energy that month that the corresponding month the previous year. If we had used less that month, my sister and I got the difference in spending to keep!

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch & Learn: Environmental and Social Justice
In what way do the various systems you observe in your community and the world interact – what did you learn about how some systems of oppression and disadvantage connect with other socio-environmental systems? How can addressing one or more of these issues impact the ones they’re connected with?

I have observed and reflected on some of the socio-environmental issues brought on by oppression and disadvantage but definitely learned more when I watched the Environmental justice video. Like with the issue of people's land flooding and needing to move, but they don't have anywhere to move to. I want to watch more of these videos to learn more, but if we divert our green efforts to neighborhoods to those that most need them (i.e. green spaces) instead of well to do neighborhoods that already have them, this would be a good start. Hopefully that would have a ripple effect so more positive changes can be made in those disadvantaged areas.

I was particualrly struck by the strength and passion of the two young activists, Wanjiku “Wawa” Gatheru and Tokata Iron Eyes. As a young person myself, I aspire to follow and fight for my passion as a climate justice activist.
I'm always overwhelmed but also excited by the interconnection among literally every social issue that anyone in my life and the world cares about. From public health to racism to food security, to national security and refugees, to disability and women's rights, to criminal justice to colonialism, all of it intersects with environmental degradation and climate change.

I just attended the free DIY Home Weatherization workshop from Community Energy Project and now have the tools to seal my windows and doors, insulate my water heater pipes, and make sure my furnace is running efficiently! Would definitely recommend.

Thank you so much for sharing this resource! I was interested in attending but didn't want to attend a workshop in person. Then I found out you participate through Zoom! I really hope to attend

My grandparents' house can't have solar panels because of structural issues, so I told them all about community solar and recommended they look into it for their electricity source! Massachusetts has much better community solar opportunities than Oregon, but I signed up to receive updates from the Community Energy Project about community solar for my home in Portland too!

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

I've been a vegetarian/pescatarian for about 6 years, but this year I decided to stop eating fish and other seafood as well. I do miss sushi, but otherwise I know it's the right choice for me to positively impact our marine ecosystems, as well as the fishers and indigenous communities that rely on them. And occasionally I take a peek at Monterey Aquarium's seafood watch and other sources and indulge in low-impact bivalves like mussels or clams.
