Action Track: Healing & Renewal Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

No sidewalks in our neighborhood but also not much traffic. It helps when the city keeps up with mowing the shoulders so stepping off the road doesn't result in chigger bites! Enjoy the morning birdsong; don't enjoy picking up the litter. Garbage collection day causes some; also smokers (butts and plastic tips); what's the story behind the broken ceramics?

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I'd rather use the money to support organic produce! It costs more but is better for the earth.

Electricity Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?

Interesting that ocean wave energy is so powerful and constant and it's so difficult to come up with a good solid efficient solution to producing consistent efficient energy. Once that does happen, and it will, this type of energy is just exactly where most of the people of the world are located, in coastal areas.

Watched Seaspiracy. Very troubling to see that if fishing is continued at its current rate populations will collapse by 2048. Another good video available on YouTube is "Salmon Confidential", which shows how bad farmed salmon is for natural populations of native salmon and for consumers of  the product.

Drawdown Ecochallenge is the first time I've gotten into the details of how greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced. Before, EVs and alternative energy sources were about the extent of my thinking. Now I know about many more sources of greenhouse gases and the solutions that need to be implemented. Just about every aspect of our lives is damaging the environment. I am discouraged to see that the solutions we have in hand are not being more urgently implemented.

Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

The climate impact of refrigerants is much greater than I ever imagined. Supermarkets use large amounts of HFCs, with one supermarket contributing more to greenhouse gas emissions in a year than over 300 cars.

They contribute to global warming much more than CO2 does.

Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

My county has a gender pay gap, with women earning 84 cents for every dollar earned by men. Food and housing insecurity are a serious problem in my county. One in 4 people live in poverty, many of them in single-parent households headed by women.

What are your next steps for saving energy?

Is anyone else having trouble with the online energy audit? I've entered the info 4 times on 3 different days and get an error message, basically "this part of the website isn't working try again later."

      HI Gwendolyn,
I'm not sure but because the original Ecochallenge was to end June 30th, it may have had something to do with it. However, I've just sent out an email to the team indicating that the challenge has been extended until the end of this year (Dec. 31). Anyway, I'll check out the online energy edit myself and let you know how things turn out. Thanks for your dedicated participation.  -Ed

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

Biochar improves soil quality and increases crop yields.
