Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Ahlia Kitwana 5/17/2020 7:07 AM
"Best by" and "Use by" are recommendations for freshness
"Sell by" is an arbitrary date set by store or producers
Each state comes up with its own expiration date rules and I should become familiar with ours.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    Chloe Bowman 4/24/2020 10:06 AM
I would rather use this money to help out Food Link. The shelves are getting empty because so many people need help.

    Food Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Ahlia Kitwana 4/24/2020 2:07 AM
I intend to actually purchase smaller diameter plates.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Chloe Bowman 4/23/2020 9:38 AM
Large scale production of meat is not environmentally friendly. Animals produce lots of methane which is damaging to the ozone layer. The grains used to feed these animals are much more environmentally friendly, however. If we consumed these grains instead of using vast amounts of them to feed livestock, the world and the people on it would be healthier. A diet heavy in vegetables and grains instead of meat has been linked to fewer medical complications and a longer lifespan.
