  • Reflection Question
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/18/2021 11:16 AM
As I learn more, I realize that the issues are much bigger and more serious than I ever thought and it has me thinking about these issues a lot more frequently and wondering more often what I can do to help. The parts that most overwhelm me, are how much damage simple things we do in our daily lives can actually cause so much damage and also the fact of how little a lot of people care, including government systems that put economy and power over the environment which controls our entire existence. What gives me hope, is how many people are starting to care and all of the movements and transitions to eco-friendly options that are starting to set forth around the world.
  • Reflection Question
Land Sinks Support a Community Garden
What are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/18/2021 11:11 AM
Community gardens bring people together, bring natural beauty to the area (a good distraction from the filth, garbage, and industrialization), and give hope for a more green environment. This matters to me because I grew up in a very green area and have always had an appreciation for plants and greenery, so seeing community gardens in a more urban area like Brockport or Rochester makes me feel at home and happy with the world.
  • Reflection Question
Action Track: Healing & Renewal Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/18/2021 11:07 AM
Planting trees helps you keep in touch with the Earth, it allows you watch the growth of a life you have created/supported, it gets you outside and breathing fresh, clean air while also adding in an element that will help clean the air, and it also gives you a peace of mind and allows you to escape the craziness of the rest of the world by just focusing on one simple part of the Earth.
  • Reflection Question
    Electricity Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/18/2021 11:03 AM
My next stop would be trying to convert my electricity source as a whole to green energy.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/10/2021 7:05 AM
Using public transportation or walking are probably the two  best ways to engage with the community...if you are biking or in the car you are not able to slowly observe everything around you.
  • Reflection Question
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/08/2021 7:42 AM
When the weather is really cold, the walks are a little tough, but with the weather being warmer on some days, breathing in the fresh air feels amazing and being able to watch everything going on around me, makes me feel a little more alive.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Improve a Bus Stop
How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/04/2021 7:26 AM
By influencing public or private transportation services to switch to electric vehicles, they will still be able to fulfill their service without hurting the environment as much.
  • Reflection Question
Industry Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household
What kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/04/2021 7:25 AM
I try to talk to my friends frequently about environmental issues and little changes that we can make that can make a difference. A common thought process that occurs is "what difference am I as an individual going to make?"...well, if you start making change and then get your friends to start making change and then they get their friends to make change, and so on then we make one big change together. It is the little things in our daily lives that we think aren't that big of a deal that continue to contribute to climate change.
  • Reflection Question
Industry Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/04/2021 7:24 AM
Yes, switching to green energy, making less trash, walking or biking rather than riding or driving in a vehicle, etc. are all changes that may help decrease my carbon footprint.
  • Reflection Question
    Industry Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Makenzie Wilson's avatar
    Makenzie Wilson 3/02/2021 2:37 PM
Two big single-use items that I have been looking into alternatives for, is plastic baggies and plastic wrap. I have found reusable/washable baggies that use sustainable materials and I have also found bees wrap as an alternative to plastic wrap that is eco-friendly and is also able to be reused, washed, and can be used as a food storage alternative! Other single use items I would like to replace are q-tips and make-up rounds. Both of these items I use on a daily and I have found alternatives for both that are washable or made out of bamboo, which is a more eco-friendly alternative due to its rapid growth.
