Industry

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

DAILY ACTION

Industry

Practice the 5 R's

Recycling

I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

COMPLETED 1

Electricity

Choose LED Bulbs

LED Lighting

I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

When choosing not to overload your plate you leave enough food for others in your family to eat. Many people take alot of food, but then others go hungry. It wastes resources for other people to use. This is why in America I think that we should be careful of how much food we consume, and be thankful for the food that we have in abundance, because in many countries around the world people, and children are starving due to a lack of proper nutritious food.
  • Reflection Question
    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I can make two types of places. I can put a recyclable box next to the large trash can in my garage so that I am able to easily throw the recyclables into the recycle bin and the garbage into the garbage bin.

It makes me feel good because I am able to help the Earth and protect it even by doing something small.
  • Reflection Question
Action Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

It gets you out and active! Spending time outside is so good! You get to breathe in fresh air, be active, and relax! disconnect and enjoy sounds of nature!!!! You just get to take it all in! The weather, the sky, the warmth of the sun on your skin, the little details hidden in the earth that makes it so beautiful! You get to enjoy all of it! There is very little I enjoy more than being outside! :)
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

When driving in a car, it increases the amount of fossil fuel usage. Which in turn emits carbon into the atmosphere which warms the earth and contributes to the negative effects of climate change. When walking we lessen the amount of carbon that we out into the atmosphere and thus benefits the climate.
  • Reflection Question
    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Hannah True 3/08/2021 12:59 PM
Well I love being able to help the environment and I think that recycling is a great way to do that! I also think that I can add my own "R" of restoring the environment by planting a tree or by growing a garden during the summer! I love vegetables and it would help my family too so I think that it would be a good investment.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

It lets me know the food that I am eating is healthy for my family and I to eat! I know exactly what terms mean and what and when foods are good for me
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

I never realized how much time I actually spend on technology. I think it is because I am constantly so busy so I carry my homework with me to lunches or during breakfast. Once I stopped to take a 30 minute break. I learned that I actually could taste food, and enjoy it and focus on how good it was! I was honestly amazed! when practicing mindfulness, I really try not to think about anything or do anything for that time period at all. I honestly just try to sit there and remain clam. I try to focus only on my breathing. With mindful eating I was doing the action of eating!
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Try Carpooling
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

I am constantly at one of my three jobs, either tutoring, working as a district intern, or at Wegman's. I commute to my church, to the grocery store, or to my grandparents house.
Absolutely! Instead of driving by myself to work and then having my parents go out separately to run to the store or to drop my brother off at work, I drop him off at work, and pick up things at the grocery store so that they do not have to, and we lessen the use of fossil fuels
  • Reflection Question
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Hannah True's avatar
    Hannah True 3/05/2021 4:46 AM
I LOVE going on walks! Not only with my dogs but also with my family and my friends! I enjoy disconnecting from all the technology and stresses of life and just enjoying nature. Weather I am going for a walk in the morning, afternoon, evening, or even during the moonlit night, I always enjoy going for walks to see different aspects of how blessed and incredible this earth is. I think I could go for walks longer, or take a different rout or choose a different starting point. A change of scenery is good, so maybe one of these days I'll try to go on a long walk up a mountain or something!

I chose to join the challenge and choose the actions that I did because I wanted them to be realistic goals that I could set for myself and for others. I think that everyone can do something to help the environment even if it is small.
