Jon's actions
Industry
Plastics Audit
Reduced Plastics
I will complete a plastics audit to see where plastics show up in my life and determine how I can reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Electricity
Communicate With My Elected Officials
Onshore Wind Turbines, Offshore Wind Turbines
I will write or call 6 elected officials telling them not to support fossil fuel subsidies and instead support wind energy generation.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Land Sinks
Support a Community Garden
Multiple Solutions
I will support a community garden by volunteering, donating, or advocating for a new or existing one.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 15 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Transportation
Advocate For Greener Vehicles
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars, Efficient Trucks
I will assess the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on electric and fuel-efficient vehicles.
Buildings
Online Energy Audit
Multiple Solutions
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Zero-Waste Cooking
Reduced Food Waste
I will cook 3 meals with zero-waste each day.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn About Cattle Farming
Improved Cattle Feed; Improved Manure Management
I will spend 60 minutes researching cattle feed and manure management, or visiting a dairy farm to learn about their farming practices.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions, and opting out of junk mail.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Encourage My Organization to Measure and Manage Our Carbon Footprint
Industry
I will share a business carbon calculator and encourage my organization to improve our sustainable practices.
Industry
Green My Job
Industry
Using Drawdown's Job Function Action Guide, I will learn about climate actions I can take at work.
Electricity
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Electricity
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Onshore Wind Turbines, Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jon Sturm 10/06/2023 12:31 PMGot my home energy assessment report today. "Leaving unused chargers plugged in wastes small amounts of energy that can really add up." Especially when running 24x7... like a leaky faucet, drip drip dripping away leads to a large water bill... It gets worse though because we all probably have lots of different chargers for different devices plugged in all over our home. Look around for those examples. Always-on devices represent about 30% of my monthly energy consumption... -
Jon Sturm 10/05/2023 10:51 AMToday was our company's annual global day of purpose. In a little under 90 minutes, our team packaged 10,000+ nutritious meals partnered with www.riseagainsthunger.org. #FoodSecurity -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Companies Leading in Green EnergyEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
Jon Sturm 10/04/2023 1:43 PMI sorted my spending by vendor and sorted by the dollar amount most to least... then researched each on opensecrets to see if my money was funding anti-science parties or elected officials. I was pleasantly surprised, but also gave me an idea of where I could refocus my spending with certain companies that don't value the environment or human rights... -
Jon Sturm 10/03/2023 4:30 PMWe are smart enough. We are strong enough. We have the technology. We need the will... the will to survive. Literally. The will to survive.Turn anxiety and fear into action. It's action that turns that fear into momentum. Unstoppable momentum... and hope. Hope for a better future for our children, grandchildren, and beyond...#TEDTalks #SustainabilityNow #VotingMatters #GoGreen #Drawdownhttps://www.ted.com/talks/clover_hogan_what_to_do_when_climate_change_feels_unstoppable -

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Jon Sturm 10/01/2023 12:13 PMLocal state parks are great places to forest bathe, touch grass, or whatever you need to do to recharge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Jon Sturm 10/01/2023 12:11 PMWe have been using meal kit services for 4 years now. Receiving only what we need, and using everything we receive has significantly reduced our food waste. -
Jon Sturm 10/01/2023 12:07 PMWe bought our EV in May of this year. We still have (but rarely use) a fossil fuel carbon-emitting vehicle... Our personal experience has been a reduction in both our electricity AND our gasoline costs. Our electricity bills dropped 26.3% and gasoline dropped 79.5% over the last 6 months.
I wanted the more expensive and brand-new make and model. But my wife (ever so smart) convinced me (with some resistance on my part) to try a less expensive make and model. So not only are we saving money because we didn't buy a $50K model we're saving overall on the total cost of ownership...
