  • Reflection Question
    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

Drying one load of laundry a week puts 0.1 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Hang 'em outside and save yourself $11 in electricity costs while you're at it.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Gary Stockmaster's avatar
    Gary Stockmaster 5/12/2020 8:17 AM
Different cultures adapt to their environments, including foods. many of the 'richer' countries have more access to a wider variety of foods and materials. More research is being done on our foods as new plant-based meat alternatives are being brought to market.
  • Reflection Question
    Materials Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Gary Stockmaster's avatar
    Gary Stockmaster 5/12/2020 8:14 AM
We have switched to reusable containers instead of plastic bags.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

I learned something new here. The approach makes sense when there may be benefits for the long term for both the cattle and the land. Interesting statistics about open pastures in summer can reduce the milk production compared to being shaded in the trees.
  • Reflection Question
Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

This is an evolving technology and I've been evaluating the options for a while. Today's EVs may not get us to Massawepie and back but hybrids will.
  • Reflection Question
    Transport Conduct Virtual Meetings
How can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?

    Gary Stockmaster 4/25/2020 3:46 PM
What would we do in this current environment of social distancing and no large groups without virtual meetings? They have been very effective and lets others know we are all still out there and healthy.
  • Reflection Question
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Gary Stockmaster's avatar
    Gary Stockmaster 4/25/2020 3:44 PM
We have been big 'recyclers' for a long time. I'm glad that one of the Scout requirements to to monitor waste and improve recycling methods at home and on campouts.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Gary Stockmaster's avatar
    Gary Stockmaster 4/25/2020 3:42 PM
We really need to pay attention to portion control. Most restaurants serve way too much. Smaller plates is a good control method.
  • Reflection Question

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Gary Stockmaster's avatar

I have been lax on reviewing dates until lately It does make a difference.
