It's going great.  One more person has signed the petition from the Sierra Club asking Publix to stop using plastic bags in its check-out lines.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Heidi Steen 2/21/2020 8:25 AM
People in richer countries can afford meat more easily than less financially privileged people.  Raising animals for meat requires large amounts of land, also less available in poorer countries.  Eating meat cause "rich people diseases" like heart disease.  Raising livestock causes deforestation and methane production.

I signed a petition from the Sierra Club asking Publix to voluntarily stop the use of single-use plastic bags in their checkout lines.  If you're interested, I'm glad to forward the link to you.

Driving a hybrid Prius is great!   My car is 10 years' old and still gets 45 mpg.  My husband's car is about 5 years old and gets about 55 mpg.  I only need to go to the gas station once every 3-4 weeks.  It costs $20-22 to fill up my tank, depending on the price of gas.
  • Reflection Question
    Materials Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Heidi Steen 2/18/2020 12:30 PM
Today I used a reusable, plastic cup from the cafeteria, rather than a disposable, paper cup for my coffee.
  • Reflection Question
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Heidi Steen 2/18/2020 12:30 PM
I am careful to use the paper recycling bins in the classrooms and offices, rather than placing waste paper in the trash can.

I close all my blinds in my condo to keep it insulated from the sun so that the A/C doesn't come on while I'm at work.

  • Heidi Steen 2/18/2020 7:59 AM
I use cloths instead of paper towels to dust and clean.
