In this challenge, I had to learn the difference between sell by, use by, and best by dates. I researched the definitions of each to see what the differences between these were. I used this information to buy better selections at grocery stores in order to reduce the food waste that is created by society. This one time challenge has definitely changed the way that I shop and choose products in order to reduce food waste produced by me.

What were the most important things you learned about sell by dates as it relates to sustainability?

I have not posted much about how this daily challenge has gone, but I have began to use more multi-use products like cups and straws to help reduce my overall waste. I have also recycled more of my one-time disposables as well

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Before studying these terms I did not know there was much of a difference between the types of dates. Knowing the difference will now better help me in selecting food so those foods will not be wasted. Best by indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. Sell by is used to ensure proper turnover throughout the journey of the food product. This helps the food retain a longer shelf life even after purchase. Use by marks the last date recommended for the use of the product.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Straws, coffee cups, and plastic bags. I could substitute metal straws, cups, and reusable bags for these items
