Deb's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 30 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Health and Education
pay tuition for Guatemalan young woman
I helped to pay the tuition for a Guatemala young woman to attend the summer program for EMT training. She had received a scholarship for half of the tuition and I paid the other half. I chose it because I know her and her family. She is smart and dedicated to learning. She will attend medical school this fall.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
donate to Chico Mendes Reforestation Project
In 2015, 2016, and 2018 I traveled with others to Guatemala to work at a reforestation project. I have donated financially during the pandemic.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous Peoples' Forest Tenure
I will donate to Native American Rights Fund, which protects tribal natural resources and environmental rights and promotes Native American Human Rights.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meals each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 30 minutes researching and shopping from 3 businesses owned by women, people of color, or immigrants.
Transportation
Go by Bike
Bicycle Infrastructure
I will commute by bike 3 miles each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars
I will spend at least 45 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Transportation
Encourage electrification
I, with 3 other Grannies, walked and/or rode e-bikes in the U of IA homecoming parade. We joined members of Johnson Clean Energy District and Citizens Climate Lobby. The message : "Electrify Everything."
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
pollinator habiatat
Today I planted swamp milkweed seeds, The goal is continued bank restoration at our lake home. This past summer I planted several more native grasses and today I planted swamp milkweed seeds that I "harvested" from a neighbor. This has been a five year project. Each summer I do more, including adding plants that are pollinators.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?
Deb Schoelerman 10/21/2023 12:42 PMMy goal is to ride my bike if my destination is 3 or 4 miles or less from my home. It is a good feeling to know I am transporting myself and I enjoy being out in the open air.
