What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

    Holly Metzler 9/10/2019 8:58 AM
One of the most simple ways to reduce water consumption at home is to turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth! My outdoor garden on a timer, set to water just before the sun is up, so that the water has less chance to evaporate. One of the next ideas that I am working on is to do my dishes in a large container, so that the water can be used on landscaping after the dishes are done. I would also like a rain barrel, now that the State of Colorado allows this.

We made a couple efforts 2 years ago (that are still working for us): since our house is on a raised foundation, we could add laundry-to-landscape recycling, so all of our trees are watered when we do the laundry.  We also set up 2 of our 6 downspouts to go to barrels, for rainwater harvesting.  It only lasts us about 2 months when we need 6 months (at least!) but I do have 4 more downspouts to go....

How are people responding to the statistics you're sharing on social media?

I have just begun this endeavor, and am looking forward to reporting how people respond.

This past weekend posed a bit of a challenge meeting my daily objectives of reducing portion sizes and animal products. We had a business event that skewed my ability to participate. Prior to this event, the participant's login was not available to the site, which prevented me from logging in to report my activities. I hope this is not too common an occurrence, as I am hoping to help lead a high school in the Campus EcoChallange. I did receive word today that the high school science team is interested in meeting next week to discuss this possibility. My current vision is to get my local high school and several regional high schools on board for a friendly competition in the EcoChallenge leading up to announcing the results on Earth Day 2020 (50th Anniversary).  This photo is from Earth Day March for Science in 2017. I am here to learn about this process to bring it to my community, and I am not disappointed.

Hello Community Team members. I am working on figuring out how this works so that I can bring the Campus EcoChallenge to my high school, and hopefully a slew other regional high schools, on board in early 2020 in honor of Earth Day. I am super excited to see how this goes!
