Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

Greenhouse gases found in old refrigerants are up to 10,900 times more potent than carbon dioxide. I will help eliminate these gases through the purchase of offset credits to ensure we all have a planet we can thrive on.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 30 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Forest-Friendly Foods 2
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Transportation
Learn about Carbon Offsets
I will visit Tradewater’s website to learn more about carbon offsets, and why they are a necessary solution in combating a climate crisis.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Women-Owned Businesses
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will shop from women-owned business(es) today.
Industry
Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household
Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.
Buildings
Fix Leaky Faucets
Low-Flow Fixtures
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Industry
Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Research Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 15 minutes each day researching businesses owned by women, people of color, or immigrants that I can support when shopping.

Reflection QuestionTransportation Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Zoe Levin 5/01/2022 8:21 PMDespite living in a rather walkable area with the ability to use a car whenever I need one, in the past, my neighborhood had very limited access to public transportation. Recently, a trolley station has been constructed nearby and which I now have access to. Having not been able to use public transport nearly as often in the past, I have been very excited to use the trolley. I find that not only is it an efficient way to get from place to place, but it is also an interesting way to observe the city and find your way around. -
Reflection QuestionElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Zoe Levin 4/17/2022 11:47 PMIn my mind, there isn't one vision of a sustainable community. I can imagine so many different ways that communities can become sustainable and I think that depending on the location and general demographics of each community, sustainability will look different. In Pacific Beach, one change I know must be made in order to become a more sustainable neighborhood is what is done with our food and garden waste. I think PB and San Diego as a whole should take on city-wide composting initiatives like San Francisco has implemented. If the city was to provide composting services, it would make it much easier for individuals to compost, preventing a large amount of waste from entering the landfill and creating opportunities for our community to sustain itself a little better. -
Reflection QuestionTransportation Learn about Carbon OffsetsWhat are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?
Zoe Levin 3/26/2022 10:16 AMBefore purchasing an offset, you should consider the type of project being used to offset emissions and the regulations and certifications an offset project has. For example, Tradewater has two different offset projects. One destroys refrigerants and the other mines and destroys methane. Additionally, Tradewater is verified by the American Carbon Registry and Verra, and they are also supported by the Drawdown Project. This is important to note because companies could be green-washing and these verifications show which companies are legitimate. -
Reflection QuestionAction Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Zoe Levin 3/13/2022 12:00 AMSpending more time outdoors can enhance my sense of place by showing me the different aspects of my community and the reasons that I am so attached to where I live. This understanding would give me more knowledge on aspects of the environment and human activity as well as help me appreciate what makes San Diego so special. -
Reflection QuestionAction Track: Building Resilience Forest-Friendly Foods 2How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Zoe Levin 2/26/2022 7:29 PM(I know this action was related to my diet but I chose to change my use of personal care products)
It was rather easy to change the products I use because I have done a lot of research on what I want to buy. However, it is very difficult to find palm oil free body care in stores so I had to purchase products online. As well, the price is much higher than conventional, palm oil using products. Finally, it lead me to think more about the other impacts a product is having (packaging, shipping, etc.) because I felt like I had to better weigh my choices. -
Reflection QuestionFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Zoe Levin 2/10/2022 11:24 PMIn the past, I have been less focused on supporting women-owned businesses and more on purchasing products and services from small and local businesses and business owners. I have often noticed when a company is owned by a woman but I now will place a greater importance on seeking out businesses owned by women and choosing to support women owned businesses over others in order to benefit families and communities. -
Reflection QuestionIndustry Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their householdWhat kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?
Zoe Levin 1/26/2022 3:19 PMWe discussed how we were unaware of many different aspects of what adds to our carbon footprints. We came up with some possible 'solutions' or ways that we can make small improvements that reduce the negative effects on the environment. I plan to continue these conversations by promoting a carbon footprint calculator to more of my friends, implementing some of my 'solutions', and with my parents, discussing our impact. -
Reflection QuestionIndustry Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Zoe Levin 1/26/2022 10:24 AMYes! I can reduce my carbon footprint in a variety of ways. One that I want to work on is incorporating more meatless meals into my diet. I will find some recipes that don't include meat and I will find some meat/milk replacements that I can use when cooking. Also, I want to get better at purchasing produce and other foods from farmers markets near me!
