Protect our watershed - learn and do

The Tualatin watershed is crucial to our community's well-being. Learn more about the conservation and restoration activities of the past and present that are ensuring the health of our watershed. Pick an action from the following options: 1) Switch to organic or slow-release fertilizers, 2) Replace a non-permeable surface with a permeable one, 3) Always pick up after pets (if you notice a location, park, or greenspace with a pet waste problem, find a way to improve the disposal infrastructure), 4) Plant tough/hardy plants that require little or no extra water/fertilizer, 5) Use roof water or greywater in the garden instead of having it run directly to the street or down the drain.

What did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?

Most transportation has been generated by burning liquid hydrocarbons. It is responsible for 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
For more bike friendly cities -
    a. Networks of well-lit, tree-lined bike lanes or paths - the more direct, level, and interconnected - the better.
    b. Well-designed intersections, roundabouts & points of access.
    c. Access to public transit, secure bike parking, city bike share programs, and workplace showers.

Women and Girls Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

Women and girls have higher risks and are more vulnerable to events of climate crisis and natural disaster. It is most acute in women of poverty. If we gain ground in gender equity, we also gain ground in climate crisis.

Women and Girls Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

Population of the Earth depends on fertility rates and headway made for gender equity. Drawing down emissions depends on rising up underrepresented communities. 130 million girls are denied basic education. An education can mean strength, adaptability, and choice for pregnancy rather than chance.

Women and Girls Research Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

I take my bike in Portland to Gladys Bikes which is a bike shop owned by women - for women bicyclers specifically. It's really nice to go to a business that knows how to work with bikes and confronts equity challenges. I can research more women-owned businesses! I have also been looking for businesses owned by people of color.

During this time, it is essential that people work from home as much as possible, and meet virtually. It honors values of wasting less resources through unnecessary travel while still trying to stay connected.

What could you do differently to waste less?

I could avoid paper towels in my kitchen, & instead have my own hand towel. My roommates buy them and we've been avoiding community hand towels, but there could we a waste free way to do it!
