Kerry Keck 10/31/2023 2:02 PMThe morning started rainy and cold. I also have an aging pet that we needed to get the the vet. We are all home again (‘though I will be administering subcutaneous fluids for dehydration, and giving an oral medicine in pill form (hello pill popper!🙂).
After the rains and vet, I did go out and water all my new and not-yet-planted plants, and worked on converting part of the area from ragged grass to native plants. The best way to do this is lay down non-glossy cardboard in overlapping sections, water, then apply a couple inches of compost, then a couple inches of untreated wood mulch. This quickly breaks down and enriches the soil. One can do as I plan, and cut holes through this and get the plants into the ground. The compost I’m using is from our own composting efforts (I may need to supplement with purchased compost, given the large area I’m working with).

Kerry Keck 10/30/2023 9:53 AMMy neuropathy got the better of me today. -
Kerry Keck 10/30/2023 6:12 AM45F degrees this morning as I tend to breakfast for house cats and a bundle of feral cats (some of whom come into our house for kibble on demand, soft beds and “indoor plumbing”). Watering the flowers, including recently acquired native plants. More planting through the day. -
Kerry Keck 10/28/2023 2:41 PMMy haul from today’s native plant sale at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center: 15 plants, 8 species, 6 of which will be new in my gardens. Spice bush, American Beauty berry, Indian grass, chile pequin, cardinal flower, pigeonberry, Gregg’s mistlower, rosy palaflox. Lots of folks there - interestingly, they weren’t rushing the milkweed tables -
Kerry Keck 10/28/2023 10:51 AMI have been posting to social media today regarding native plants and native plant sales today. One area of discussion was the need to include native grasses in a habitat : many smaller species of butterfly and skippers rely on native grasses.-
Jeanne Poirier 10/28/2023 7:02 PMWarred the weeds and planted 10# of native turf grasses - have loved the challenge of transforming weed patch to native beauty on my small patch of ground. Takes time, energy and so well worth it! -
Mary Hanks 10/28/2023 12:46 PMI've appreciated the opportunity you've given me to learn about pollinator-friendly plants beyond native milkweed. Now I know that a true pollinator garden might bear some resemblance to a prairie. I also know that a stand of mealy blue sage that's full of bees and the occasional butterfly is a beautiful and relaxing sight.

Kerry Keck 10/27/2023 9:15 AMThis morning I went to the native plant sale at the Houston Arboretum. As last year, there was a line of perhaps 60 people when they opened the gates - I was first in line, arriving a couple hours before to be at the head of the line. I purchased 15 plants (8 species, 6 of which are new to my garden, providing more diversity).
Now to plant them all! -
Kerry Keck 10/26/2023 10:31 AMAnother day of sporadic rainstorms. The garden is being watered by the clouds, and I’m enjoying what can be viewed from the house. -
Kerry Keck 10/26/2023 9:56 AMI went to early voting today, using my feet to walk to/from the house to Houston METRO. Overall, it was @ 1 mile broken into 4 segments, and another 2 miles on the bus. We were rained on coming home, causing us to scamper from the bus stop closest to the polling place (open) to a nearby enclosed shelter.
So combined my daily physical exercise, pursuit of my voting rights, and consideration of reducing private car trips. -
Kerry Keck 10/25/2023 1:07 PMToday, I provided supports to my Maximillian sunflowers: they are planted against my 7 foot tall backyard fence, towering over the fence by as much as another three feet. Because they get more sun from the west, their flowers are oriented to the west … toward my over-the-fence neighbor. They get to see happy sunflowers with none of the watering or care - a gift from me to them 🙂🌻 -
Kerry Keck 10/25/2023 12:59 PMI have donated to a land conservation effort near me: ArtistBoat.org. This group is trying to raise $10 million dollars in the next two years to protect and finish the purchase of 1,400 acres of wetlands and endangered coastal prairies on the Texas coast.
The Anchor Bay Peninsula, on Galveston Island (Texas, USA) will be developed into 52 houses, displacing 697 species of wildlife if we don’t raise the money to complete the purchase for permanent protection by February 2024.
