Buildings
Office building energy score research
As my office lease is in a period of transition this quarter, I will research the commercial energy score status of the office building. This policy requires commercial buildings 20,000 square feet and larger to track building energy performance and report this information annually. The goal of this policy is to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions for commercial buildings in Portland in accordance with the Climate Action Plan. This was on hold for a few years but the 2023 report is required by April 22, 2024.
Transportation
Purchase a Carbon Offset
Efficient Aviation
If I buy a plane ticket, I will purchase a carbon offset.

Diane Henkels 10/24/2023 12:33 AMI'm not clear on why my check ins are not more than 10--seems I've had several, and so I'll check because that's part of the challenge!

Diane Henkels 10/24/2023 12:31 AMEveryone should at least sign into the Oregon Travel Study.com to learn more re their habits in a way to give some solid data to the decision makers in transportation. I joined the eco challenge to take just the kind of time I'm taking now to do the challenge and to share the actions -- and share to information! -

Diane Henkels 10/15/2023 12:45 AMI shared today re the Siletz Tribal Run to the Rogue that is a commemoration of Siletz Tribal ancestors who were forcibly removed from their homeland in the Rogue River Country and marched north to Siletz. -
Diane Henkels 10/11/2023 11:34 PMTime to dive into researching buying carbon offsets for some plane travel I've done--future post will go into the differences in the travel some by commuter plane seem to have come up less carbon impactful than driving, though most of the driving has been by EV in the last several years.Anyone recommend some carbon offsets then?Previously I purchased Bonneville Environmental Foundation offsets~I was so glad they worked on Oregon projects. I'm also studying up on the Climate Trust. Would love to read any suggestions on this. -
Diane Henkels 10/08/2023 8:25 AMI'm reminded yesterday and today at a sailing regatta sailing as a transportation mode. There are several efforts in play to green the motoring and the bottom painting of sailboats. I like this guide in part because it includes considerations where sailing is impactful on the environment--like sailing in sensitive areas, using bottom paint, small spills, etc. https://www.sailorsforthesea.org/programs/green-boating-guide -

Diane Henkels 10/06/2023 10:26 PMI'm liking this commitment I feel and I am learning more about this area of transportation. For instance everyone seems to think that biking is more dangerous than other transport, yet I learned in my research that the League of America Bicycling identifies Oregon as the 2d most bike friendly state behind Mass, Among other info In 2019, 19.4 % of traffic deaths in Oregon were people outside of vehicles. -
Diane Henkels 10/04/2023 11:34 PMToday was a WFH day for me, somewhat unplanned. That also included preparation for an early a.m. meeting with a mid-Willamette Valley chamber of commerce governance committee. We will be describing how small commercial customers of investor-owned utilities are impacted and how they play a part in implementation of Oregon's policy to decarbonize the State's energy sector. Looking forward to EVing there and back! -
Diane Henkels 10/04/2023 12:00 AMToday instead of attending in person a Board meeting as chair ("Commodore" in this case) I attended virtually instead of driving 250 miles round trip (an EV Chevy Bolt). I vastly prefer going in person generally but I was grateful to be able to attend by Zoom on this one.
