Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household

Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.

  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Portion control is important because it allows you to have a tight handle on how many calories you are presumably consuming. This way, you eat what your body needs, instead of mindlessly overindulging
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

A diet heavy in meat can cause many health issues like increasing the risk of obesity, cancer and heart disease. It also has a huge impact the planet. Raising cows, pigs and chickens generates as much greenhouse gas emissions as all cars, trucks and automobiles combined.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would rather use the saved money to pay for school books or keep and save for emergencies.
  • Reflection Question

List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

My friends and I always choose a day in the week to all go to the store together to avoid us all making separate individual trips.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

Spending time outdoors can help clear your mind and can be a way to reduce stress and improve your health.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

I think that by reducing things like single use plastic and replacing them with more sustainable options will be a very important step t take. I also think using new technology like the Anaerobic Digester at MSU will help decrease our effect on the planet by a large amount.

What kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?

I think that showing people how the personal choices they make can have such a large impact on the earth is important because you don't always know how much harmful your choices can be.
