  • Reflection Question
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Joel DeVyldere 1/30/2020 2:52 PM
The Cost of Meat in Rich Countries
In the US, the cost of meat from grain-fed animals is effectively subsidized by the federal government. I don't think it's ethical to grow animals in small boxes and feed them grain that is not natural for them to eat - and especially not using taxpayer dollars.

    Effects on our Bodies
I know that over-consumption of red meat can cause health issues over time. I haven't researched what the effects of factory-farmed, antibiotic-laden meat does to people over time, and whether there are any documented ill health effects, but this is something I am interested in learning about.

    Effects on Our Planet
Meat and dairy production are major sources of greenhouse gasses, which are contributing to unchecked increases in global surface temperature. This is why I think it's important to implement policies that incentivize a plant-based diet (vegetarianism and veganism) for everyone in rich countries.

    Effects on Other People
Plant proteins, such as grains and legumes, that are produced by people in poor countries are often sold to rich countries where they are fed to cattle, artificially inflating the price of protein for already vulnerable people groups. I think this is unjust.
