We are all connected: Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. Of course, she was not the first African woman to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize but racism, colonialism, and sexism have long played into this award. Read about Maathai, a biologist and activist, and reflect on what Americans can learn about her work and apply to our own hemisphere.

Native Land and Practices Acknowledgement

Native Land Acknowledgement means to learn about, talk about, and show respect for the Native inhabitants of an area of land. We do this for many reasons: to correct history, protect and preserve the culture and identity of native peoples, acknowledge the role of European colonization in the loss of native lives and lands. For this activity, read about the Lenape. The tribe indigenous to Brooklyn, Queens , and Manhattan. Who are they, what was NYC like before colonization? How can we honor the Lenape today? Climate Change and Wildfires: How is climate change affecting you? Our hometown? And what can we do now?

First, the article about the CA wildfires and climate change. Climate Change In Your Hometown The featured article discusses the connection between climate change and California wildfires. Another Times article, from 2018, lets you track how the number of days when temperatures hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) or higher changes in your hometown over your lifetime. As you look at the graph created based on your hometown and the year you were born, what do you notice? (If you want, try entering the birth year of your parents or grandparents as well.) Then, scroll to see the climate predictions for your hometown when you are 80 years old. Continue to scroll to learn more about these predictions, and then see how your hometown compares to other parts of the country and the world using the interactive globe.

  • Reflection Question
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Alexis Cohen's avatar
    Alexis Cohen 3/03/2021 6:02 AM
Some barriers that stand in the way of women's equal participation are that if people are not aware of climate change they are not aware of the barriers or women. Another barrier is pay men and boys get more opportunities and get paid for it, unlike women or girls.

Why have the accomplishments of African Civilizations been obscured? How can we sustain these accomplishments and their impact?

I think that the accomplishments of African Civilization have been obscured because they don't realize that all their culture and money and traditions are originally from the great country of Africa other than that we really don't know.
  • Reflection Question
    Electricity Carbon Footprint Calculator
What can you do to either lower your carbon footprint OR "offset your carbon footprint. When you "offset" you basically pay it forward---you do something kind for the environment or another person to balance out your carbon use if you can't reduce it.

I will start riding my bike more to save on money and carbon with a car I will also start to eat better.

basically, the same thing that she did but instead of detecting lead in water, it will detect cancer in a person's body.

Telling one person every day that climate change or global warming is not the problem it is us and that animals are going extinct so much faster than the normal rate and trees are getting cut down faster than ever animals that were here before we will be gone because of us, Lions, Rinos, Tigers, Panda, Elephants, and many more are gone because of us this will help because then more people will beware of our situation and taking action and bringing even more awareness to other people.

sometimes I feel like I am trapped behind a window not able to go outside and enjoy myself but to go outside with a piece of cotton strapped to my face it feels so distant not being able to have a playdate and then convince your parents to make it a sleepover. I swear if I see another little tiny box on my computer screen with one of my friends on it, I swear I will lose my mind!!! the lockdown has shaped me into a big fat pretzel.

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Voting Rights
What does it mean to be able to vote? Should the voting age be lowered to 16?

    Alexis Cohen's avatar
    Alexis Cohen 10/21/2020 5:51 AM
No, I don't think that the voting should be voting to 16 It is important to vote but it should not be brought down to 16 because they have just started high school and will not make very good or mature votes for politics it is very important to vote if not we would not have any leader and that would be caused to do totally immature things because there would be no laws everyone should be able to vote all colors and all religions are equally important to our world
