    Transportation Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

When taking multiple trips a year, to lessen the amount of flights taken, I can decide which ones are possible to drive. With work it is hard to always take off that extra day for the driving, but with a more planned out trip, driving could work out. For example, we have a family house in Cape Cod, MA, instead of flying every single time, we choose to drive and we take an extra day off to do so. As for like Florida this year, we chose to fly because we don't have enough time to take off of work, so I bought a carbon offset to help the carbon emissions from the flight.

In what other ways could you help girls overcome health barriers to being able to attend school?

I was doing some research and saw that another issue with girls and attending schools is the issue of early marriages in some areas. I know there is not much I can do as one person, but even finding a place to donate money to, to help put an end to early marriages so these young girls can go to school. There are so many reasons they can not go and it is not fair. With enough research anyone can find a way to help in just the smallest way. It will be my goal to save up a little money and donate towards an end to young marriages. This was just one of the many articles I read, https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/immersive-story/2017/08/22/educating-girls-ending-child-marriage

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

It can help enhance your sense of place by watching how the wildlife works. How they're so adapted to that space of their own, it shows you that your place is not within their space. It's like a wake up call that wilderness does need its own area and many people should want to stop invading it. We as people would not appreciate other species coming in and taking over our land, so we should not do it to every piece of space that nature has. Nature is good for your mind and body. It helps heal you without knowing it. It takes your mind off things and shows you that sometimes things aren't so bad. It's a step away from reality. It also deepens your knowledge because you're seeing first hand the actions that go on within the forest, woods, wetlands etc., that you're studying. I know that on my daily walks in the wildlife refuge walk that when I decided to step off the trail and explore deeper, that my appreciation grew more for nature/wildlife and I'm going to take the actions I need to do to make these beautiful areas remain intact.

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

For me planting trees and being around them helps decrease my stress. I love taking my walks in a wildlife refuge nature trail walk because not only is the walking good for my health but the scenery too is just beautiful and decreases anxiety and stress. Nature is just a key component in everyday life that many do not realize. That is why I will be planting my three trees along with my brothers and his wifes, to add to the beauty of nature.

Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

So after changing my bedroom and bathroom lights, I decided that I would purchase more to continue providing my whole house with LED light bulbs. Once I finish that project, I want to look into fixing leaky sinks, it will save on a ton of water. Then maybe once that project is complete, it will be warm enough out, I can begin planting some trees and starting a garden.

Transportation Test Drive an Electric Bike
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?

Yes, I often find myself driving short distances instead of biking or walking. I did recently in Cape Cod, MA, test out an electric bike. It was pretty cool but honestly I would rather use a regular bike or walk. I think those are better for exercising for me. As for incorporating an electric bike, I could use one to go visit my grandma who lives down the road, or to see my nephews who live a few miles over. I may not use an electric bike, but a bike for me would be good, even walking would be great. An electric bike just doesn’t seem like good exercise, although it would be nice instead of using so much muscle.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Kennedy Clark 3/09/2021 11:27 AM
I can incorporate using an entire vegetable on my next meal prep by making asparagus. Asparagus is super good and one of my favorite vegetables. Also, asparagus is one of the vegetables that I love eating the whole thing, I season it just a little and roast it in the oven or on the stove top in a pan.

What kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?

I had a discussion with my brother and sister in law. We talked about the amount of electricity used. I told them how they could change a few lightbulbs to LED light bulbs and start turning more things off that aren’t being used. We also made a plan to have a family garden in the Spring with my nephews and I. They also work in the same area with a half hour difference of work times, so carpooling was an option in the discussion to save on fuel emissions.

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I noticed some beautiful scenery, I went to the local walking park and walked the nature trail. Not only did I see the nice scenery but I do see a lot of garbage here and there. Which makes the walks not as nice as they could be. I did enjoy the trees, and the wildlife. The park is known for that and they have lots of signs in different spots for each animal that is in that area of the walk. I think people going in there and cleaning up would make the walk more enjoyable. I also think someone going in and updating the few bridges they have would add to it also. Other than that it is such a nice park, and recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a nice outdoor walk.
