CJ's Actions

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks

Action to stop sharks being killed

Sharks maintain the balance of life in the sea and keep our coral reefs healthy. But global fisheries kill millions of sharks each year. Sharks are now in peril throughout the world. We need to ban shark finning, stop culling & stop commercial fishing to save our sharks & our oceans. Sharks are losing the battle for survival, as every year humans kill more than 100 million of them. While sharks are killed in a variety of ways, most often they die because they are caught up in fishing practices or killed for their fins. I will use social media & spread the word at functions

Health and Education

Dairy is scary

I will help to close down the dairy industry by using social media, talking to people, groups & orgs. Milk & other dairy products are the top source of saturated fat in western diet, contributing to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, & Alzheimer's disease. Studies have also linked dairy to increased risk of breast, ovarian, & prostate cancers. I will role model a lifestyle without using dairy & will speak out wherever possible regarding the cruelty, health issues, environmental destruction & unsustainability of the industry. Land used for dairy production is prime agricultural land which could then be used for food production or reforestation & rewilding

What kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?

    CJ CJ's avatar
    CJ CJ 4/29/2021 7:23 PM
I am talking to people daily about climate change & the impacts & most people recognise the problem but don’t go the next step to change their lifestyle to help combat climate change. A good example was yesterday at a working lunch when when we talked about the need to lower our emissions & everyone agreed whilst they were eating or ordering their dead animal steaks
  • Reflection Question
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    CJ CJ's avatar
    CJ CJ 4/28/2021 11:33 PM
Fight the palm oil industry on the socials. Promote the apps that recognise palm oil in products. Buy products that don’t contain palm oil. Every time Indonesia starts burning off the pests then sign the petitions & write to the ambassador. Support the Orangutan rescue orgs

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

    CJ CJ's avatar
    CJ CJ 4/27/2021 3:26 AM
It is not a good idea for my household to use those water savings devices on our timers or showers.
But regionally the gov needs to fund the changeover in households like it did with light bulbs. And towns need to plant trees along the roads to lower the temperatures to minimise outdoor water use. Grey water systems need to be pushed in older houses

      CJ CJ 4/28/2021 11:22 PM
My post was supposed to say toilets & showers. Yes Emily as I have a transpiration pit & we are in drought & hardly using any water I must ensure that at least enough(some lol) water flushed thru the system to the pit. I’m thinking it’s touch & go lol. All new houses & any rental properties here  have to have water savings devices to all water outlets. So it is happening

    • Emily Manvel Leite's avatar
Emily Manvel Leite 4/28/2021 1:04 PM
I'm curious about what makes it not a good idea for your household--abundant water supply?  The need to move water through your system?
I agree that it would make this work better/more equitable and create faster change to have the government (i.e. the water company here in Indiana) fund the changeover to low-flow fixtures.  So many of us got the CFL/LED resources through the electricity suppliers, and it really has reduced power use.  Good for our planet AND lower bills.
