What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

I really like that carbon offsets are a way to help reduce your carbon footprint by advocating and paying for the carbon you used by using it in a way to create renewable energy. I would like to try to purchase carbon offsets to help reduce my CO2 footprint after taking flights to France.

Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

On my daily walks, I always notice the weather and the birds. If it's a nice day out there are so many birds, if it isn't as nice there are fewer birds. I also notice that on nice days there are a lot more people enjoying the nice weather than on other days. I think going outside even if it's snowing is so much fun. Running is a little hard when it's icy and snowy out, but it is so beautiful. I wish there were more flowers and pretty plants planted in the are.

What kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?

I had a great conversation with my best friend from home. She realized the amount of driving she did was really necessary and harmful. I spoke to her about carbon offsets and she said that she would talk to her parents and see what they could do every time they took a plane. I think sometimes it's hard to see how much we do to destroy the Earth instead of helping and hurting it.

Action Track: Healing & Renewal More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Lea Calhoun's avatar
    Lea Calhoun 3/18/2021 12:13 PM
I honestly really enjoyed eating more fruits and vegetables. I had a lot more energy, I would be able to go on longer runs, and it just made me feel overall better. I used to eat meat with every meal, I also tried new alternatives of ground beef and got ground tofu instead. Eating less meat, especially pork and beef, are huge greenhouse gas admirers. If we all reduced the amount of meat we ate, we would be helping ourselves and the Earth.

Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

During the summer I work for my grandmother, she has a little garden and a huge backyard. During the summer I tend to her garden and grass. The lawnmower constantly gets stuck with fresh grass. From now on I will make sure that we are recycling all the excess that gets leftover. I have really enjoyed being outside and taking care of the beautiful flowers and plants. For the future, I am going to make a compost bin so when my grandmother has to produce bits to throw out we can put them in her soil to fertilize the garden.,

After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Lea Calhoun's avatar
    Lea Calhoun 3/06/2021 7:12 PM
I want to see if there is a way of using renewable energy in a house that I rent. I also want to take more meat out of my diet. I see that carpooling and walking places, as well as reducing travel will help reduce my carbon footprint.
  • Reflection Question

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

I go on runs to get out of the house. It feels so nice to feel the wind and cold air. Today I ran on the canal. Since it has been a little warmer ground is gushy and muddy. I'm starting to see the leaves bloom a little even though most branches still are leafless. I feel that when you go outside and just feel the air going into your lungs the whole world feels real. Sunsets while hiking or walking on the canal makes me appreciate every color the Earth has provided us.

Action Track: Healing & Renewal Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Lea Calhoun 2/28/2021 6:17 PM
I felt relaxed after cooking dinner with no phone, tv, or computer. Then after cooking I got to sit down and talk with my roommate without distractions.  I feel that when I'm looking at a phone or tv while watching tv it takes time away from being social and actually enjoy and appreciate what I'm doing.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Lea Calhoun's avatar
    Lea Calhoun 2/26/2021 3:16 PM
I will start to make sure that to have no connecting flights and only take 1 round trip a year. I travel to France to see my family and we have used multiple planes in the past to just get to France. I will make sure to buy some carbon offsets from an organization like The Gold Standard. This will help put research and funding into renewable energy.

    Transportation Improve a Bus Stop
How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

    Lea Calhoun's avatar
    Lea Calhoun 2/26/2021 2:54 PM
The way I would advocate for transportation systems that minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs is by shoveling the snow off the bench and sidewalk when it snows. I live in front of a bus stop and I want to make it more accessible for people to sit before the bus comes. I also want to make sure that the area is clean by picking up the litter.
