What are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?

Over the past month, I have helped create four gardens - many for friends and one at with our school community that will benefit, students, staff and the neighborhood. These gardens will help with food insecurity, economically for some, and provide healthy, organic food. It has been fun to teach young people about gardening and its benefits. We have also planted trees and flowers to further reduce our carbon footprint and carbon sequestration. Students have been learning about the importance plants play in reducing carbon in our atmosphere.

How does environmental quality influence your sense of community?

Environmental quality is important to me in our community in areas like supporting our local Farmer's Market, working with the Pollinator Parks program in our city, being part of Energy Matters Community Coalition and our Winding Waters Sierra Club group and UUCCI Green Team. They all impact our community and the environment in positive ways through various events and programs.

The Environmental Studies Class at CSA New Tech in Columbus, IN works every week planting and tending a community garden for the school and greater community. The Environmental Club has also planted three pollinator flower gardens at the school, lilac bushes and redbud trees.

Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

Not much bamboo construction is available here in Indiana. Our home is an earth berm home with passive and active solar. CSA New Tech in Columbus, Indiana is taking steps to be a "Green Ribbon School" and trying to educate others about sustainability. Whenever possible, I tell people that if you ask an architect about incorporating sustainability components to their new or remodeling construction, they will cut "life cycle costs" and help the earth.
