Reflection QuestionWomen and Girls Give a MicroloanGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?
Helen Boyd 11/26/2019 7:10 PMI totally agree with this statement. I choose woman when donating to KIVA for this exact reason. -
Reflection QuestionFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Helen Boyd 11/25/2019 7:14 PMOver the past 3 years, I have kept my consumption of meat to weekends only to reduce my carbon footprint. I sometimes ponder the idea of becoming Vegan and I'm not sure why I haven't done the switch yet. Any Vegans among our group who can tell me more about their decisions to adopt this particular diet? -
Helen Boyd 11/24/2019 6:05 PMI learn something new each day doing this type of challenge. I never thought of my overflowing Inbox of e-mails as a source of CO2. Please read this article and comment. Yes, not as polluting as a car but certainly avoidable, I have my work cut out for me with this one!!

Helen Boyd 11/23/2019 8:03 AMSuch a struggle to avoid the draw of electronics and avoid their planned obsolescence. I have an inexpensive cellphone that I have had for years and despite slowing down, I just can part with it as the idea of it being part of the landfill is one I have trouble accepting so I will hold on to it till it totally dies. Let me know how you deal with electronic e-waste? What's been far easier is to train myself to turn off unneeded power bars that use up fathom energy even when there not in use. I guess it's just a new habit to develop. Have a great weekend of Ecochallenge! -
Helen Boyd 11/20/2019 10:32 PMWhat an amazing turnout at this evening's Breaking the Silence on Climate Change. Huge thanks to Celia and CV Unitarian Fellowship for their Leadership. So empowering to see so many people engaged and committed to taking action locally. A heartfelt presentation by Councillor Will Cole-Hamilton of Courtenay launched us into Kitchen Table conversations. Thank you to all of facilitators, organizers, and most importantly the members this wonderful community we call home! Let's keep the conversation going...-
Steve Faraher-Amidon 11/22/2019 5:51 PMGreat stuff Helen. Thank you for your inspiring action and leadership!

Helen Boyd 11/20/2019 10:15 AMThe film Five Acres also emphasized the importance of Regenerative Agriculture which is about much more than just sustainable using the soil as a further means of capturing CO2. -
Helen Boyd 11/20/2019 10:12 AMWhat a fabulous film at NIC last evening called Five Acres based in Nanaimo. It will be shown again at World Community Development Film festival. Learned so much about the Island. Did you know that 95% of our food is important to the Island while we have an enormous capacity to grow in the Valley. Anybody doing front lawns converted to gardens? Our farmers need all of the support they can get. -

Reflection QuestionTransport Conduct Virtual MeetingsHow can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?
Helen Boyd 11/16/2019 9:25 PMI have used Zoom meetings twice this week and request it as often as possible to avoid unnecessary travel. Today I avoided a trip to Nanaimo for a meeting that lasted 1 hour. So glad to see Telepresence as one of the Drawdown solutions. I do think it's about mindset, people are surprised when I request it and yet always feel good at the end of the meeting not to have driven needlessly.
I realize that no everybody might know about Zoom. Here is a quick definition: Zoom is a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, with or without video. Zoom users can choose to record sessions, collaborate on projects, and share or annotate on one another's screens, all with one easy-to-use platform.-
Lacy Cagle (Ecochallenge.org Staff) 11/19/2019 1:31 PMWe have staff around the country and use Zoom for almost all of our meetings. As someone who works remotely, I appreciate having video instead of just audio in longer meetings. It makes me feel more connected and engaged.
